Men loved darkness

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  (John 3:19)

This is one of the most astounding portions in the scriptures which I would want us to carefully consider today. I believe most of us would rather there was the word "some" before this generalization that men loved darkness.
...that light is come into the world, but "some" men loved darkness rather than light… I don't like darkness and I am sure most of us don't save those "some" that loved darkness. This may just be the general position for most of us whenever we come across this passage.

Please allow me to turn us again to a scripture we touched in the last message, which we took from the Gospel according to John chapter 1 verse 4.
In Him was Life...
The question that comes to my mind reading this is , what then is in me? If in Jesus is life, is death then in me? Or if in Jesus is Life, then in me must be a different kind of life. What I know as life is definitely not considered life by God.
He declared again in 14:6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life;..." He is the Life.
Now chapter 1 verse 4 concludes by saying that this "..Life was the light of men." This brings me to know that the life I bore in me is nothing but darkness. The key characteristic of Jesus' life is that it is light and the place where light is most needed is in darkness.
Ephesians 5:8 finalizes this for me  saying
For you were once darkness, but now you  are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

My friend, are you still darkness? Do you still love the life you have known ever since you were born of your mother? Men loved darkness could have been read as men loved their own lives and we would all have been caught under the generic term "men." Don't we all love our own lives?
If you have not known the other Life except the life you were born with, I will tell you, you yet love darkness. You walk, live and sleep in darkness. You are yet groping your way through life in darkness.  You must repent of that life and be born again. When we talk about birth, we are talking about a new life. Being born again, is not foremost a change of the character of an old life and living to be a better one but the emergence of the Life that is entirely new. Only then can you have that Life that is the light of men.
