FEW PEOPLE FIND IT
'Go in through the narrow gate because the gate to hell is wide and the road that leads to it is easy and there are many who travel it. But the gate to life is narrow and the way that leads to it is hard and there are few people who find it.' - Matthew 7:13-14 (GNB)
Few means
1. An indefinitely small number of persons or things
2. An exclusive or limited number.
Two very good example in the scriptures that clearly fit the meaning of this word are the 8 people that made it during the Great Flood in the entire world (Gen.7) and the 3 persons that made it out of Sodom and Gomorrah in the days of God's judgement (Gen. 19).
Jesus warned saying - 'The coming of the Son of Man will be like what happened in the time of Noah...' Matt 24:36.
I imagine many would have wondered asking Noah "What is this?" pointing to the the Ark project under construction. "This is the Ark by which all who will join me shall be saved from the destruction coming upon the earth" would have been his reply. Noah would have been mocked and jeered at for such absurdity. All went about their daily business- eating, drinking, marrying, selling and buying.
"yet they did not realize what was happening until the flood came..." (v39).
This is the reason why there are few who find it. Finding it has to do with people realising what is happening. To realise is to become conscious or aware of (something), or to grasp or understand clearly. Only a few people realise that the gate to life is narrow. Only a few realise that they ought to "live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." Only a few realise that whosoever is born of God does not sin and indeed he cannot sin. Very few can come to terms with the fact that "the cowardly, unbelieving...idolaters (covetous) and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire..."
I cannot help but wonder, how few can these ones be? Probably a billion people on earth today are professing Christians. One cannot say a billion is but a few out of seven billion people living on earth today. Not even a hundred million people can be said to be a few people. Alas! the church of this generation is under a delusion.
Let us assume that one million people were living on Earth at the time of Noah. That means 0.000008 were saved. Again, if Sodom and Gomorrah had a population of a hundred thousand, 0.00003 were saved. Extrapolating the fewness at these times to our time, in a population of 7 billion people living on earth today, 56,000 people would have been saved in the time of Noah and 210,000 people in the time of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Just as it happened in the time of Noah that only a few people were prepared for the flood, and that many went about living (eating and drinking) and pursuing their plans (marrying), not realising that God's judgement is fast approaching, so will it be at His coming!
Are you among the few who find it?
This is the question I am asking myself and you, who may be reading this piece.
Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!
